We typically recommend that your pet receive the core vaccination series. The feline vaccination series includes the combined FVRCCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Chlamydia and Panleukopenia) and rabies. The canine vaccination series includes DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus) and rabies. We also recommend the Lyme Disease vaccine as one of our core vaccines for dogs and also, strongly recommend a heartworm combination test on a yearly basis for Florida pets.
Depending on your pet’s lifestyle, we may also make addition vaccination recommendations. For example, if your dog frequents boarding or grooming salons, we may recommend the Bordetella vaccination, which protects against kennel cough. Our Sarasota veterinarians may also recommend the FiV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia) for your cat. Feline leukemia is a virus that can lead to cancer in some cats. Cat-to-cat transfer of the virus can even occur when cats share the same feeding dishes. For this reason, if you have one cat that has FeLV, we recommend vaccinating your FeLV-negative cat.
Our veterinary team is frequently asked about the safety and effectiveness of immunizations. Some pet owners are understandably concerned about potential side effects including allergic reaction. Like any medication or treatment, there is always a small risk of allergic reactions. However, the risk for such a reaction is extremely limited. In fact, choosing not to vaccinate a pet is even more dangerous. Not only are pets at risk for illness, but also if a pet becomes infected, then some diseases could even spread to family members. In addition to rabies, leptospirosis can also be passed between dogs and humans. Family wellness starts with pet well care; preventing sick animals from infecting other pets and humans is essential for overall health.
