Senior Pet Care Tips from Veterinarians

Posted on 2012-05-02 10:22:41

senior pet care in Sarasota.jpgAs animals get older, they need more medical attention, just like people do. Here at Bee Ridge Veterinarian Clinic in Sarasota, we want you to understand what to watch for as your pet ages and what we can do to help. Together, we can make sure your pet lives a long and fulfilling life, and that it receives the supplementary care it needs as it gets older.

Top Ways to Care for Your Aging Pets and Sick Animals

Whether your pet is just starting to reach the age of being a senior pet, which is usually at about 75% of its life expectancy, or has had some health programs that suggest it is starting to get older, it's important to get regular checkups at your local animal clinic. Every six months, bring your pet in for a general checkup so the veterinarians can watch for problems that require additional care.

Feed your senior pet a type of pet food formulated for older animals. These foods provide the nutrients that are most important for maintaining an aging pet's health. In addition, feed your pet the same type of food every time to make it easier on the digestive system. Often, sick animals just have weak digestive systems that have trouble adjusting to new ingredients every time you buy a different bag of food.

Watch for signs of arthritis and other bone or joint problems. If your pet has a limp or seems to experience pain while moving, you may need to bring it in for pet surgery. Sleeping on a soft, comfortable bed can help ease the pains your pet is experiencing due to getting older.

When in doubt about your pet's health, bring it in to our animal clinic. Any change in your pet's usual mood or behavior can be a sign of an underlying problem. A veterinarian has the expert training to identify the problem and provide pet surgery if needed to alleviate your pet's pain and help it live a longer life.

Preventative Care to Keep Your Pets Safe

Posted on 2012-03-01 08:05:08

Sarasota sick animals treated with vet care.jpgLike humans, animals occasionally have accidents that require emergency medical attention. An emergency can happen anytime and at any place. Unfortunately, those times are usually highly inconvenient and you may have difficulty finding a veterinarian who can see and treat your pet on such short notice. Here at our veterinary clinic, we place your pet's health at utmost priority and will do our best to make room for emergencies at a moment's notice.

Pet Emergencies That May Require the Attention of a Sarasota Veterinarian

There are many types of pet emergencies, some of which are more common than others. For example, many pet owners are aware that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but perhaps you did not know that grapes are potentially fatal. Similarly, common household chemicals, such as anti-freeze, can also be fatal to an animal without immediate medical attention.

It is also not uncommon for pets to become injured - especially if they live or roam in high traffic areas. Millions of animals are hit by cars each year, and sometimes, emergency pet surgery can save their lives. We also provide urgent care to Sarasota sick animals who are suffering from the sudden onset of symptoms that could signify a health emergency.

For example, if you notice that your dog or cat is disoriented, experiencing a loss of appetite, vomiting or suffering from behavioral changes, we recommend visiting our office as soon as possible. Furthermore, if we determine that the sick animals may have contracted a fully preventable illness, such as the canine flu, we may recommend vaccinations in the future to prevent further onset of the sickness.

If you are in need of a pet health center that will not only provide well care for your dog or cat, but also offer urgent emergency care six days a week during business hours, contact our veterinary clinic today. Although you may not have a pet emergency now, and we hope you never do, we would love the opportunity to get to know your pet and offer pet preventive health care, check-ups and vaccinations to keep him or her healthy and well for life.

Sarasota Pet Surgery

Posted on 2012-01-03 11:04:26

Sarasota veterinarians provide pet surgery.jpgPet surgery includes routine procedures such as spay and neuter surgeries as well as surgery to correct illnesses or physical conditions. If your dog is suffering from a gastrointestinal problem, he or she may require surgery to reposition the digestive organs and reduce symptoms. Injured and sick animals also occasionally need surgery to repair torn or damaged ligaments. At Bee Ridge Veterinary clinic, our Sarasota veterinarians examine your pets and perform surgery as needed to correct any problems.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Having your pet spayed or neutered prevents him or her from reproducing, keeping the pet population down and reducing the number of stray animals. Our animal clinic offers these surgeries for pets that are as young as two months old. Of course, even if your pet is older, you can still choose to have the surgery performed. Spaying or neutering your pet often improves his overall health, as the procedure reduces the risk for certain cancers and prevents aggressive or undesirable behaviors from occurring.

Surgery for Illness or Injury

There may be times when you need to bring your pet to our veterinarians for surgery to correct a problem. For example, some larger dogs may experience a condition known as gastric torsion, which occurs when the stomach and spleen become twisted. The dog's stomach may fill with air or fluid, making it bloat. If not treated, parts of the stomach may die due to the cut-off of the flow of blood.

Joint problems may also require a visit to our animal clinic and surgery to repair them. A pet with hip dysplasia may need hip replacement surgery in severe cases or an adjustment of the joint in other cases. If your dog has a torn cranial cruciate ligament, surgery may be needed to repair the ligament.

Pet Safety Tips from Sarasota Veterinarians

Posted on 2011-11-16 12:36:56

Sarasota veterinarians give pet safety tips for holidays.jpgProtect your pets this holiday season with these tips from our Sarasota veterinarians. The holidays present a number of dangers to pets. Follow this friendly advice from Bee Ridge Veterinary clinic in Sarasota, Florida when preparing for the upcoming holidays.

Before the holiday season starts, schedule a wellcare appointment with our vets to make sure your pet starts off healthy. Our animal clinic offers dog boarding to keep your puppy safe during the holidays.

Be Careful With Plants

If you celebrate Christmas and get a real tree to decorate your house, be sure to pet-proof it. Don't get a tree that is too large for your house or susceptible to tipping over. Securely anchor your tree so that an excited dog or cat cannot knock it over. Keep an eye on the water used under the tree as well.

Unless you get a tree that was raised organically, it can leech pesticides and other chemicals into the water in the tree stand. If you pet drinks the water, she can become very sick. The water in a tree stand may also have bacteria growing in it, which can also make your pet sick. Change the water often and put a barrier around the tree stand so that your pet won't take a drink.

Other common holiday plants are poisonous to pets. Holly and mistletoe will cause your pet to suffer tummy trouble if she eats them. Look for artificial plants to decorate your home without endangering your pets.

Look Out for Other Decorations

Lit candles, holiday lights, and tinsel all present dangers to your pet and may result in a visit to our animal clinic, especially if your pet chews on them. Since we prefer to see your pets for wellcare and preventative care, we advise doing what you can to keep the decorations out of your pets way.

While candles are lovely, an excited puppy can knock them over, causing harm to herself and possibly a house fire. Skip the lit candles and use electric, cordless ones instead.
